What is a cataract?
A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens, which develops gradually and can cause blurred vision, glare and difficulty with everyday tasks. It is very common with age and is treated effectively with surgery.
What the treatment involves
Cataract surgery gently removes the clouded lens and replaces it with a clear artificial lens tailored to your vision. It is usually a day case under local anaesthetic, taking around twenty minutes per eye.
What to expect on the day
- Arrive and complete a brief pre-operative check
- The eye is numbed with drops — no pain, you stay awake
- The procedure takes around twenty minutes
- You rest briefly, then go home the same day with clear aftercare
